Six Signs It’s Time for a Career Switch

There will, inevitably, be days at work when it feels long and overwhelming. However, how do you know if it is just a rough patch or time to find a new job? If you’ve been thinking about a career switch, here are six signs that it might be time to consider a new opportunity.

  1. It is no longer just Mondays that are blue

Monday blues is common, especially after a fun and fulfilling weekend with family and friends. However, if you dread work every day or feel lethargic even before heading into the office, it might be a good time to think about a career switch.

  1. Professionally stagnant

Career stagnation is a major red flag. If your current role doesn’t offer opportunities for learning, development, or advancement, it’s a sign that you might have outgrown the position.

The absence of challenging projects, limited skill-building opportunities, or a lack of upward mobility are also signs that your potential isn’t being properly utilized, and it’s time to move on.

  1. Constantly surfing job boards

“I am just looking at what is out there. I am not interested in finding a new job.” You might be saying this, but are you just trying to gaslight yourself?

While keeping an eye out for new opportunities is great, if you find yourself constantly fantasizing about new job opportunities or browsing job boards, it’s a strong indication that you are ready to find a new career.

  1. Complaining about your job on Instagram closed friends’ stories

An annoying colleague, unappreciative bosses, boring duties at work, or even KPIs that are too easy to attain are finding their way into the coveted green circle on your Instagram story. Complaining about your job to your good friends might be a sign that you are done with this job.

Job satisfaction plays a significant role in overall happiness, and staying in a role where you have nothing good to talk about will drain your energy and can lead to burnout.

  1. Can’t be bothered to talk about your job

On the other hand, if you can’t even be bothered to talk about your job to your friends, it is a sign that you should look at a career switch.

When your friends ask you about your job and your answers are “I don’t want to talk about it” or “Same old, what else?”, you know exactly what you should do next.

  1. Toxic work environment

Be it office politics, colleagues gossip, biased management, or frequent overwhelming workload, a toxic work environment can be detrimental to your mental and emotional health even before you know it.

For women, navigating such environments can be even more exhausting, particularly if you face issues like gender bias or an absence of inclusive policies. If the workplace culture consistently leaves you stressed or unhappy, prioritizing your well-being by seeking a healthier environment is essential.

Out of these six signs, how many are you spotting now?

Recognizing the signs that it’s time for a new job is the first step toward finding a role that better suits your aspirations, values, and lifestyle.

Update your resume, assess what you want professionally in your new career, and reach out to people in your network for opportunities that align with your new goals and mindset. Search for new jobs that excite and challenge you, and showcase your accomplishments in your cover letter and resume to impress your potential employers.

As women, embracing career changes can feel daunting, but it’s also a powerful way to advocate for your growth and happiness. By identifying what’s holding you back and seeking a workplace where you feel valued and inspired, you can take control of your professional journey and thrive.
